Glen Coblens Story

Dear Friends,

On July 9th, 2006, I experienced a life-threatening bicycle accident suffered while training for my first Ironman triathlon. After spending 11 days in the hospital and a few weeks recovering at home, my first milestone was attending my fifteenth consecutive B’nai B’rith Men’s Camp. I needed to go! Not only to keep my streak alive, but to see the Men’s Camp family and let everyone know I was ok, so I talked my brother into taking me on the two hour venture west.

When we arrived, we were greeted with shock, smiles and then pure joy. Weak and struggling to walk with my father’s trusted cane, the look on the older campers’ faces was priceless. The energy was uplifting and motivating. We spent time watching the basketball tournament, eating lunch, hanging with my cabin brothers and finally relaxed by the pool soaking in the sun and well wishes.  I contemplated staying the night, but came to my senses and headed home after an incredibly moving day, leaving me exhausted, but thankful for the love and support I received. There is nothing quite like the power and strength of Men’s Camp. The life-long friendships and bond between brothers is something truly special.

Needless to say, I never accomplished my goal of completing an Ironman. But what about a half Ironman? One day after the five-year anniversary of my accident, I will participate in the inaugural Rev3 Half Ironman in downtown Portland, July 10th 2011.  This race has more significance than just another triathlon.  This represents the challenge and commitment required to train hard and compete harder. Health and fitness continue to be a priority in my life. The countless hours of therapy and lengthy recovery have only strengthened my resolve. There are so many people who have supported me along this journey; now it is my time to pay it forward.

Please help me raise valuable funds for B’nai B’rith Camp by making a tax deductible donation today. Donations can be made online here by clicking on the ‘Donate Now’ tab below,  or you can contact Danika Duren, Director of Sales and Marketing for B’nai B’rith Camp at dduren@bbcamp.org
